Places For Everyone Fund Reopens for Design Stage Applications

Local authorities, businesses, charities, and community organisations across Scotland can apply for multi-year funding to support the design of active travel infrastructure that enables people to walk, wheel, or cycle.

Sustrans Scotland, with support from Transport Scotland, is offering multi-year grants for local authorities, businesses, charities, and constituted community groups across Scotland to deliver infrastructure projects that achieve one or more of the following objectives:

  • Increase the number of everyday journeys made by walking, wheeling, or cycling.
  • Support more trips to school made by walking, wheeling, or cycling.
  • Improve physical and perceived safety for people walking, wheeling, or cycling.
  • Make walking, wheeling, or cycling more inclusive for the project community, considering all protected characteristics.
  • Improve the quality of current walking, wheeling, or cycling infrastructure.
  • Positively impact areas identified by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) as among the 20% most deprived.

This round of funding will support the development of project designs down to a technical level to ensure a project can be built safely and effectively. Funding can be used to provide up to 100% of funding for design work that adheres to the following design principles:

  • Develop ideas collaboratively and in partnership with communities.
  • Facilitate independent walking, wheeling, and cycling for everyone.
  • Design places that provide enjoyment, comfort, and protection.
  • Ensure access for all and equality of opportunity in public space.
  • Ensure all proposals are developed in a context-specific way and evidence led.
  • Reallocate road space, and restrict motor traffic permeability to prioritise people walking, wheeling, and cycling over private motor vehicles.

Applications are broken down into three project stage groupings, concept, design, and construction, which are open at different times throughout the year.

The deadline for design stage applications is 18 October 2022.
