Water Innovation Implementation Programme
Closing Date: 31/03/2027
Funding to support the large-scale implementation of proven water sector innovations and to address systemic barriers to adoption, with applications open to water companies in England and Wales and, for certain activities, suppliers, academics, non-governmental organisations and other sector participants.
The Water Innovation Implementation Programme supports the transition of proven water sector innovations from successful trials to large-scale implementation. It focuses on embedding tested tools, technologies and approaches into routine operations across England and Wales to improve outcomes for customers, communities and the environment.
Running as a trial to 2030, the programme will initially invest up to £40 million across two complementary activity streams. Its early focus is on supporting projects funded through Ofwat’s Water Innovation Fund, while generating learning that may also support wider adoption of innovation by water companies, suppliers and other sector participants.
The programme responds to increased innovation activity, where many pilots and demonstrations have shown potential for wider replication across regions, asset types and company contexts. It provides support for implementation at scale, addresses cross-cutting barriers such as data, skills, processes and culture and encourages earlier adoption of proven solutions.
The approach includes ‘early adopter’ water companies leading initial implementation and ‘fast follower’ companies applying the same innovations in their own operating contexts using shared learning.
