Major Funding Package to Tackle Homelessness Across England

Two new national programmes unveiled

The UK Government has announced a funding package worth over £50 million to support councils, voluntary organisations and community partners working to reduce homelessness and long‑term rough sleeping. This investment is focused on areas experiencing the highest levels of pressure and forms part of a national effort to significantly reduce homelessness across England.

The funding has been divided into two programmes. The first and largest component is the £37 million Ending Homelessness in Communities Fund, which aims to expand the capacity of voluntary, community and faith groups that often serve as the primary point of contact for people experiencing crisis. The fund will be allocated competitively to small and medium‑sized organisations delivering prevention and support services. It will be used to strengthen projects, improve staffing levels and upgrade facilities so that local networks can better respond to homelessness.

The second programme, the £15 million Long-Term Rough Sleeping Innovation Programme, will focus on the 28 areas with the most severe and persistent challenges related to long‑term rough sleeping, including London. This funding will help develop more effective, joined‑up approaches to supporting people off the streets permanently. It includes measures such as improved coordination between services, peer support models and innovative ways of addressing complex needs.

Together, these programmes form a key part of the UK Government’s National Plan to End Homelessness, a wider strategy backed by £3.6 billion. This plan includes three national pledges to be achieved by the end of the current Parliament: halving long‑term rough sleeping, ending the unlawful use of bed‑and‑breakfast accommodation for families, and reducing the overall number of households becoming homeless. The wider strategy also connects to reforms in the private rented sector and efforts to increase housing supply, all with the aim of ensuring that more people can access safe, secure homes.

These initiatives reflect a sustained push to expand community‑based responses and create long‑term solutions that prevent homelessness before it occurs. By supporting organisations working at the frontline, increasing local capacity, and promoting more collaborative approaches, the UK Government intends to stabilise vulnerable individuals and reduce the pressures that contribute to homelessness across England.
