Welsh Government Announces £35m for New Approaches to Housebuilding
The Innovative Housing Programme has been established to support affordable housing projects that can deliver new homes across Wales. The programme aims to create demonstrator schemes to help inform the Welsh Government about the type of homes it should invest in for the future.
Supported by £90 million of Welsh Government funding over its lifetime, the programme seeks to stimulate the design and delivery of new, good quality, affordable homes to:
increase supply;
speed up delivery of homes to the market;
trial new housing models and methods of delivery that address issues such as pressing housing need; fuel poverty; demographic change; help carbon reduction targets; and
prove the replicability of innovative housing models.
In the current phase of the programme, for 2019-20, £35 million is being provided to build more innovative housing. The funding will be used to test new approaches and technologies to help develop social and affordable residential dwellings.
Applications are invited from social housing providers and private sector housing bodies in Wales.
Housing and Local Government Minister Julie James said:
“This programme provides an important opportunity to deliver affordable, high-quality homes that help to reduce fuel poverty and reduce the impact of housebuilding on the environment.
“The significant investment in the programme means Wales is well positioned to determine how the social and affordable homes of the future can and will be built.
“I’m looking forward to seeing some exciting projects coming forward for funding, so we can create some beautiful innovative housing in Wales.”
Applications for the upcoming round of the programme are yet to open. Further details will be provided when available.
