Welsh Government Extends Placemaking Grant for Town Centre Projects
The Welsh Government has announced a two-year extension of the Transforming Towns Placemaking Grant, making £26 million available to revitalise town centres across Wales. The grant forms part of the wider Transforming Towns programme and aims to support a range of physical improvements in urban centres.
Established in March 2021, the scheme combines several smaller regeneration grants into one capital funding route. It offers support for interventions such as the refurbishment of commercial properties, enhanced town centre living and improved public spaces. Other eligible activities include the development of green areas, recreational spaces and active travel infrastructure.
Applications can be made for up to £300,000 per project, an increase from the previous cap of £250,000. The funding is open to all 22 local authorities in Wales, with one lead authority in each region administering applications.
Projects may be led by local authorities or delivered by third parties such as Business Improvement Districts, town councils, private organisations or individuals. Regional partners are responsible for selecting which town centres are prioritised and how funding is allocated.
Grants can support a range of uses, including improvements to markets, converting vacant buildings for new purposes and infrastructure upgrades for businesses.
Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Jayne Bryant. said:
‘The continuation of the grant programme, with increased funding and grant allowances, makes funding for regeneration projects more accessible, enabling us to build on the successes we have already achieved.’
