Fisheries and Seafood Scheme Offer Grants for England’s Seafood Sector

Funding for fishing and seafood sector to support sustainability, innovation and coastal communities

Fishers, seafood businesses and coastal communities across England are encouraged to apply for funding through the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS), which supports the long-term sustainability, resilience and economic performance of the sector.

A total of £132 million has been allocated over five years, including around £6 million ring-fenced for small-scale coastal fishers. Individual applicants may receive up to £250,000 per financial year.

The scheme supports projects aligned with Defra priorities, including reducing emissions and waste, improving marine environments, supporting nature recovery and driving regional economic growth.

Eligible applicants include commercial fishing, aquaculture and seafood processing businesses, as well as organisations involved in recreational fishing, environmental conservation and sector-related recycling. Charities, community groups, coastal councils, local authorities, public bodies, universities, research institutes and new entrants may also apply, provided they are based in England.

Funding can be used for a range of activity, including health and safety improvements, innovation, marketing, processing, port infrastructure, environmental protection and biodiversity projects. Support is also available for marine litter initiatives and collaboration between scientists and fishers.

Since reopening earlier this year, the scheme has approved over £1 million in investment and continues to welcome applications. Small-scale operators are particularly encouraged to apply, with dedicated funding and support available for first-time applicants.

This year’s funding priorities are workforce and skills development, community partnerships and infrastructure.

Applications of £250,000 or more will be considered by a funding round panel, while smaller applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis.
