LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme Ends December 2026

Payments up to £50,000 are available

The LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme was launched in December 2024 by the Ministry of Defence.

Between 1967 and 2000, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) personnel were banned from serving in the UK armed forces, leading to people being dismissed or discharged, harassed, abused, and in some cases imprisoned.

To be eligible, the applicant must have:

  • Served in HM Armed Forces between 27 July 1967 and 11 January 2000.
  • Been affected by the Ban on LGBT personnel serving in HM Armed Forces.

Applications from terminally ill veterans are prioritised.

Two types of Financial Recognition Payments are available: up to £50,000 for the LGBT Dismissed or Discharged payment; and the LGBT Impact Payment (comprised of three levels, from £1,000 to £20,000).
